According to the Dutch De Telegraaf podcast "Kick-Off," journalist Van Derison revealed on Friday that Netherlands national team coach Xavi has requested a second meeting with Virgil van Dijk to further discuss the 35-year-old Liverpool centre-back's future with the national team.

Virgil van Dijk's future with the Dutch national team remains uncertain. Xavi has already announced a preliminary shortlist internally, but unlike in the past, this list will not be made public this time.
Virgil van Dijk recently confirmed to British media that he will meet with Xavi before deciding whether to continue playing for the Netherlands national team.
“I feel I can still provide value to the team and play an important role. If we share this view, then we have two great years ahead of Euro 2028. If not, we’ll see,” Van Dijk said.
Van Derricksen stated that a decision regarding Van Dijk's continued tenure with the national team needs to be made as soon as possible. "This must be decided within this week, as the roster will be announced next week. I think if he decides to withdraw, we will know sooner. In any case, this matter will be announced in some way."
It is understood that Xavi has already met with Van Dijk once and has now requested a second meeting. Van Derison revealed that the two met on Wednesday, the same day Xavi watched Liverpool's match against Atletico Madrid.
Virgil van Dijk's contract with Liverpool runs until mid-2027. Xavi needs to assess the veteran's form over the next two years to determine whether he will continue to represent the Netherlands national team.
Van Dijk's colleague, Yeron Kapett, said that the Dutch team is currently preparing for a new tournament cycle, so Van Dijk's form two years from now is also an important factor to consider.
"What needs special attention is that the team is now starting a cycle for a major tournament. What will he be like in two years? This is a long time for a footballer, especially at this age. Can he still maintain his peak performance in two years? Everything depends on his condition two years from now."
Meanwhile, the depth of the Dutch central defensive options behind Van Dijk will also influence the final decision. Currently, no young defender has developed to the point where the team can confidently replace Van Dijk, so the Dutch team needs to weigh the possibility of keeping the veteran in the squad.
