According to Bild, Schalke's management is open to Neuer returning to work at the club after his retirement.
Neuer's relationship with Schalke has been quite complicated. After Neuer transferred from Schalke to Bayern Munich 15 years ago, he was booed by Schalke fans every time he faced his former club, and the fans still find it hard to forgive his choice.
Schalke sporting director Frank Baumann, in an interview with Bild, addressed the boos: "Everyone has always known that Manuel has a Schalke heart. So I think it's quite regrettable. I had hoped things would be different."
Schalke supervisory board chairman Axel Heffer said: "As a club, we are proud of his career. His departure was quite controversial, but I personally think that everyone makes mistakes, especially when they are young. At some point, these things should be put behind us. He will enjoy his time first, and then consider what he wants to do. As for whether he will work in his hometown or a new hometown in the future, that is his own decision."
Baumann stated that Schalke has not yet spoken with Neuer about this matter, but "we would absolutely not rule out the possibility." When asked if he would offer Neuer a club job, Baumann added: "In principle, I think it would be interesting to reintegrate former players into the system, especially considering their ability and passion. So on this issue, my answer is 'yes' – of course, I also know that finding a solution won't be easy."
