This choice was reportedly influenced by commissions from his agent and associates, with his uncle reportedly receiving €500,000 in the deal. Dugarry criticized, "This outrageous attitude clearly came from family. It's shameful and unimaginable. Your first conversation with a player should be: Where do you want to go? The player's wishes are the most important."
The former French striker also believes that Malik Fofana's introverted personality may have prevented him from asserting his choices in front of those around him due to a lack of assertiveness.
